When the COVID-19 pandemic began and stay at home orders were issued in March, 2020, dental offices were forced to close. During this time, most people stayed in their homes and avoided visiting others, including healthcare professionals like dentists. The months that offices remained closed gave health care experts better understanding of the virus and how it spreads. As a result, dentists were able to make investments in additional safety measures that included improvements to their equipment, protective equipment and air filtration in order to provide a safe environment for their patients. The Canadian dentist understands the importance of regular dental care as part of a person’s overall health, and are pleased to be back up and running, providing dental care in a safe way during the pandemic.

Now that dental offices are open and operating under strict safety measures, it’s very important to make an appointment to visit your dentist so they can check on the health of your gums. Gingivitis is a common condition in the gums, and it’s also the disease that comes before periodontal disease. If your gums are red or swollen you might have gingivitis, but if you find out early and follow the advice of your dentist or hygienist, there is a good chance you can reverse the gingivitis and get your gums back to their natural, healthy state.

Diseases in the gums and bones inside the mouth are referred to as periodontal disease, which can develop if gingivitis is left untreated for long periods. Since this disease develops over time, catching it early is the key to preventing it from causing problems in other areas of the body.

Experts warn that gum disease can lead to serious health conditions such as infections, sepsis, cancer, heart attack and stroke, and a recent study connected periodontitis with severe COVID-19 complications. The study looked at 568 COVID patients and found that the ones with severe periodontal disease were at much higher risk of being hospitalized or dying.

Signs of gum and periodontal disease include bad breath, red or puffy gums, teeth that are moving, or changes of colouration in your gums and teeth. If you have these symptoms, it’s important to make an appointment with your dentist right away.

We know you’ve been staying home to stay safe and healthy during this time. However, keeping on top of your regular dental care is a safe way to take care of your health during the pandemic.

To all our patients:

While the provincial government is implementing stricter guidelines and stay-at-home orders, dental offices continue to be deemed essential health care and will continue to stay open.
With the direction from the Royal Collage of Dental Surgeons and Public Health Units, our office, like other dental offices, have implemented a series of strict protocols to greatly minimize viral transmission. Following these strict protocols, not a single dental office in Ontario has experienced a COVID-19 outbreak related to dental treatment.

Our office, since reopening in June, has seen thousands of individual patients and we are happy to say we are not aware of a single case of transmission associated with dental treatment. As always, we have gone above and beyond on all regulations so we can ensure the safety of patients, doctors, and staff alike. Patient safety is of the utmost priority at Kay Dental Care.
Since the lockdowns began, in the spring of last year, we have seen a noticeable deterioration in our patient’s oral health: more cavities, severely decayed teeth, progressing gum disease etc. This is especially true with teenagers and young children. This is a universal observation in all dental offices, not our office alone. Granted, not everyone is affected the same. We can attribute this to a series of obvious factors: poor diet and oral hygiene care while at home for prolonged periods of time, break in previous routines, stress, metal fatigue and most importantly, lack of preventative and hygiene care in the dental office.
Understandably, due to dental offices being closed for a few months, most patients had fallen behind. We have tirelessly worked to book all patients that had their appointments cancelled and we are still catching up with backlog from the spring closures. In addition to extending our workdays and hours, Dr. Filo, Dr. Hormoz and our incredible staff have not taken a single week off since reopening to accommodate every patient in need: urgent or otherwise. Despite the higher risk for health care workers, our commitment to our patients remains unwavering. We will continue to do so for as long as it takes to return to normal.
We strongly recommend all our patients to keep or book their hygiene care appointments. Preventive care is the best care. Good oral health is paramount in maintaining good systemic health and a robust immune system. Your hygiene care appointment is not only a tooth cleaning but a check for overall oral health. Your long-term oral health greatly depends on routine screening. A small cavity now will turn into a root canal or tooth infection later. In the wake of this pandemic, we all need our immune systems working at 100 percent instead of dealing with unnecessary tooth infections.
We will continue to make every effort to contact all our patients and book them for hygiene care. If you have missed your hygiene appointment or have fallen behind with your hygiene care, please call us to book your appointment. If you have questions regarding your oral health or want to discuss our infection control protocols, do not hesitate to contact the doctors directly.

We remain humbled and eternally grateful for your continued loyalty and support! We can’t wait to see you all!

Sincerely,
Dr. Elvis Filo, Dr. Alborz Hormoz and the Kay Dental Care Team

Easing Anxiety to Promote Strong Dental Health in Schomberg

While it’s hard to admit this, we know that not everybody loves coming to visit us for their regular dental work. Add in the pressure of more advanced work and that anxiety level often goes through the roof. While we do everything, we can to provide a calm and welcoming environment, sometimes we recommend sedation dentistry.

Rest assured that you aren’t alone. It has been estimated that more than one million Canadian adults rate themselves as “very afraid” or “terrified” regarding seeing the dentist, with another two million “somewhat afraid.” (Source: Chanpong et al, 2005).

We often see patients who come in facing anxiety that stems from less than positive dental visits from a very early age, however, after a few positive experiences and visits, the level of anxiety lessens.

Sedation Dentistry: The other blue pill
For those patients who are truly anxious, we offer oral sedation options that help reduce fears and relax. The use of sedation in dentistry has revolutionized the way patients view dental visits and help them get back into the chair. Patients who once were afraid or anxious about even the most routine dental procedures can now visit the dentist with confidence.

Sedation dentistry is typically administered to healthy individuals who need help relaxing or managing treatment anxiety. Reasons for needing sedation may include lengthy procedure times, dental phobias, strong gag reflexes, or fear caused by negative experiences in the past. Our Kay Dental Care team typically uses medication to aid patients in relaxation at their dental appointments. In most cases, the medication is a tiny blue pill that is taken prior to the appointment. The pill allows for moderate sedation, meaning you wake up feeling refreshed after your procedure with little to no memory. As the medication is meant to relax you to a point of calm, it is our recommendation that you have someone bring you to and from your appointment. Please do not drive.

While you may not get over your dental anxiety with a few positive visits, it’s great to know you have options that can make you comfortable through every stage of your visit.

Are you curious about improving your dental esthetics? Cosmetic dentistry is a growing field, with new procedures and products making it easier than ever for people to enhance their smiles. With today’s minimally invasive procedures, many patients can transform the look of their teeth without a huge investment in time or money.

Cosmetic dentistry is a specialty that includes treatments as varied as orthodontic work, such as braces and aligners, to cosmetic whitening, bonding, crowns, and veneers. At Kay Dental Care in Schomberg, our dentists are specially trained in several aspects of cosmetic dentistry. Dr. Elvis Filo has particular skill in full mouth reconstruction as well cosmetic procedures. Dr. Alborz Hormoz is a fellow of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists, who has expertise in fitting invisalign braces, dental implants, and crown work.

Minimally Invasive Dental Treatments in Schomberg
Cosmetic procedures are as varied as dental patients. Some patients are interested in minimally invasive procedures such as whitening. While drugstore whitening may be convenient, Kay Dental Care is uniquely placed to offer patients the most optimal whitening procedures from in-office treatments to take-home kits. And because this is dentist-level whitening, patients can be assured they get the safe level of brightening they want with the skill and assurance of a dental professional.

Studies have shown that a brighter smile can boost confidence. A straighter, more functional smile can also improve self esteem and acceptance. There are many cosmetic dental procedures that can help patients get the smile they have always wanted.

Cosmetic Dentistry and Functionality
In addition to whitening systems, Kay Dental Care offers veneers, crowns, and implants that can improve patient smiles as well as functionality. Veneers are thin porcelain shells that are bonded to the front of teeth. They are often used as an alternative to orthodontics. Cosmetic veneers have improved in look and dentists can now match veneers to natural teeth. Crowns can help cap and repair cracked and chipped teeth, restoring teeth to full, healthy functionality. Implants, often used to replace one or several teeth damaged by injury or decay, are a game-changer for many people who feel embarrassed about missing or damaged teeth. They can both change the look of a smile and allow patients to have full and comfortable use of their teeth.

If you are looking for ways to enhance the look of your smile, don’t be afraid to ask about treatment options and schedule your consultation. At Kay Dental Care in Schomberg, our team of dental health professionals work with you to select the best and most appropriate treatment for you and your budget.

On March 2, 2019 Kay Dental Care held its Community Grand Open event. It took place in our office at 50 Doctor Kay Dr in Schomberg.  It was a full house filled with family, friends, patients, community counselor in attendance and the King Weekly Sentinel to capture our celebration.

Ribbon cutting ceremony at Kay Dental Care

We handed out 200 swag bags filled with lots of goodies including promotional items, fridge magnet and a teeth whitening pen. We were humbled by all the love in the room.

As Dr. Filo mentioned during his speech, it has been a true project of love and we are thrilled to be able to share what we have built with the community of Schomberg. Dr. Hormoz also took a moment to thank his staff, patients and everyone involved in building the Kay Dental Care.

If you or someone you know is looking for a new dentist, we would love for you to drop by for an office tour and let Kay Dental Care look after your smile.
